Since 2007, the rules and regulations have completely changed the way in which residence permits are requested: in many cases, it is no longer necessary to go to the police station but to the post-office.
There have also been some changes with documents: for example, if today we speak about "residence card" we mean the document for relatives of European Union citizens. This is what has always been known as "residence card" and which is now called "EC permit for long-term residence".

Following changes with Law n° 94 of July 15th 2009 the way in which documents are obtained has changed.
IMPORTANT: stay permits must still be presented at all public administration offices for licences, authorisations, enrolments etc.
It is NOT necessary to present stay permits for health services, obligatory school services or declarations of birth or recognition of children (birth register – civil state).
