The Tuscan regional law governing immigration has been approved

regione toscana

Following a very long debate in Council the Tuscan regional law governing immigration was approved. For the President of the Region, Martini, besides governing the fundamental rights of immigrants “the provisions aim at making clear and visible all processes dealing with arrival.”
These provisions – said Martini – “aim at making clear and visible all processes dealing with arrival because we know that clandestine immigrants look for the grey areas, and do not respect regulations.” This is a law which also “aims at integrating regular immigrants better, since they will be precisely our best allies for combating clandestine immigration.” Denying that the new law would increase “the struggle among the poor, and even less so that between immigrants and Tuscans”, the President of the Region emphasised how in Tuscany “a number of resources were being invested in order to widen the offer of health services, school services, services to the aged, and now also housing.” Concerning the “struggle among the poor” the president added that “unfortunately they already exist today and are the result of the dismantling of social services established by government policies.”

For the President “the law does not deal with national policies but only social policies strictly linked to the Region’s areas of competence.” Should there be any attempt by the central government to take over “it will be the Constitutional Court that will decide whether the decisions made in Tuscany are constitutional or not, just as the Court has often done, recognising the correctness of our laws.”
